- Tell your therapist the truth – the whole truth.
- Trust that a good therapist will not judge you.
- Choose a therapist who maintains a professional distance.
- Look for a therapist who gives you homework so that you can continue to process between sessions.
- Find a therapist that you feel comfortable with – interview therapists until you find the right one.
- If you feel stuck or like you’re not making progress, address it with your therapist.
- Take an active role, don’t expect the therapist to “fix” you.
- Say what’s on your mind, don’t expect a therapist to read your mind.
- Don’t be afraid to fire a therapist you believe is not effective for you.
